Frequently Asked Questions
What if my baby falls asleep while breastfeeding?
Some babies will fall asleep at the breast while nursing. Though this is not
typically a problem, be sure your baby gets an adequate amount of milk before
sleeping. Typically, a baby should suck actively for about 10 to 15 minutes
per breast before dozing off. To prevent your baby from sleeping while nursing,
or to arouse your infant who has dozed off at your breast, try the following
techniques:
- Dim the lights; bright lights may force a baby to close his or her eyes.
- Talk to the baby and make eye contact while breastfeeding.
- Make sure the baby is not too warm; sucking decreases at warmer temperatures.
Remove blankets, breastfeed your baby in his or her diaper only, or rub his
or her head with a cool cloth.
- Hold the baby upright.
- Rub or pat the baby's back, hands or feet, or massage the baby's crown
in a circular motion while breastfeeding.
- Switch breasts when baby's sucking starts to slow down.
If you still have questions or are experiencing difficulties consult your
physician.
