Breastpumps
Women who continue to breastfeed while working must express milk (using
a pump) throughout the work day in order to maintain the supply. It is helpful to know
what to look for when choosing a pump.

If You Plan to Use a Different Pump
When choosing a breastpump, the most important considerations are ensuring
that the pump will be hygienic, easy to use and closely mimic nursing. In addition, try
to find a pump that best fits your lifestyle. For example, working mothers may find a
portable pump more manageable than a rental pump. No matter which pump you choose, look
for the following features and accessories:
- An automatic cycling feature that simulates your baby’s suck-release-relax
nursing pattern
- An adjustable vacuum level so you can increase the vacuum pressure
as you become more comfortable with nursing. Since it can take up to 10 days for you
to adjust to the vacuum pressure, pumps that require you to monitor the pressure manually
may be difficult to use.
- Boilable and dishwasher-safe parts and accessories
- Interchangeable pump parts
- User-friendly assembly
- Hygienic, quality parts that separate milk from the parts that
create suction
- Built-in safeguards that prevent contamination from milk overflow
