Expectant Mothers: What You Need to Know

The Nursing Mother's Timeline

Six Weeks Before Birth to Six Weeks After Birth

The 6th to 7th Month of Pregnancy Familiarize yourself about the benefits of breastfeeding. Read, read and read.
The 8th to 9th Month of Pregnancy Attend a breastfeeding preparation class. Classes are available at hospitals and/or through your health plan.
The Beginning of the 9th Month of Pregnancy Time to be fitted for a nursing day bra. A sleep bra and nursing pads are necessary for milk leakage at night. A nursing gown and pillow will help facilitate comfort when breastfeeding. A nursing stool is optional.
1 to 4 Weeks after Delivery Attend a nursing mother's support group. Support groups offer tremendous encouragement and sensible breastfeeding advice. If you plan to express breastmilk, this is the time you may want to purchase or rent a breastpump. Purchase additional nursing bras or accessories as necessary. Mothers need 3-4 nursing bras since most will have milk leakage. Always wear a clean and dry bra and pad.
2 to 3 Weeks after Delivery The first growth spurt! Your baby may want to breastfeed very often, possibly every hour! This is usually because your baby is getting ready to grow and will breastfeed frequently to increase your milk production. Remember, your breasts work on a "supply and demand" cycle.
6 Weeks after Delivery In general, you are feeling more comfortable. Breastfeeding is easier to manage.
